Kabuki, Japanese traditional theatre, was born in Kyoto in the early Edo period (17th century). In Shodo Island, an island of Inland Sea, Kabuki has been played by the villagers for the villagers since the late Edo period. The tradition is still alive there. Villagers from children to adult play Kabuki every year in the rural 170-year-old thatched theatre.
